The Kentucky-raised, New Orleans-schooled, New York-based Cowherd is best known for his long-running partnership with drummer/bandleader Brian Blade, with whom he co-founded the Grammy nominated Brian Blade and the Fellowship Band, whose acclaimed, influential albums showcase Cowherd's stellar keyboard work and singular compositional skills. When not recording and touring with the Fellowship, Cowherd has worked extensively with a broad array of players and singers from the jazz, pop and rock worlds including Joni Mitchell, Norah Jones, KD Lang, Rosanne Cash, Iggy Pop, Cassandra Wilson and Lizz Wright.

In 2013, ArtistShare and Blue Note records released Cowherd’s first album as a leader “Mercy” which features Bill Frisell, John Patitucci and Brian Blade. Cowherd and Blade also co-led three all star Joni Mitchell tribute concerts along with such artists as Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Chaka Khan, Aimee Mann, Glen Hansard, Cassandra Wilson, Kurt Elling, Esperanza Spaulding, Patti Austin, Judith Hill, Kris Kristofferson, Rufus Wainwright, Michael Kiwanuka, Lizz Wright and Becca Stevens.

In 2017 Cowherd released a new recording on the exclusive “vinyl only” Newvelle record label. “Gateway” consists of 7 compositions by Cowherd and one from Brian Blade and features Steve Cardenas and Tony Scherr. The recording will be released later this year as a special release in Japan digitally and in cd format. Other recent projects this year have included performances by the Fellowship Band and the Shreveport Symphony and the Loyola University Symphony Orchestra with compositions and orchestrations by Blade and Cowherd as well as tours with Alicia Olatuja, Nate Smith and Kinfolk and Tom Guarna’s Wishing Stones project.

This October Cowherd will team up with Brandi Carlile to re-create Joni Mitchell’s “ Blue” album at the Walt Disney Theater.

Brain Blade

Brian Blade was born and raised in Shreveport, Louisiana. The first music he experienced was the Gospel and songs of praise at the Zion Baptist Church where his father, Brady L. Blade, Sr., has been the pastor for fifty-two years. In elementary school, music appreciation classes were an important part of his development and at age nine, he began playing the violin. Inspired by his older brother, Brady L. Blade, Jr., who had been the drummer at Zion Baptist Church, Brian shifted his focus to the drums throughout middle and high school.

During high school, while studying with Dorsey Summerfield, Jr., Brian began listening to the music of John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Art Blakey, Thelonious Monk, Elvin Jones, and Joni Mitchell. By the age of eighteen, Brian moved to New Orleans to attend Loyola University. From 1988 through 1993, Brian was able to study and play with most of the master musicians living in New Orleans, such as John Vidacovich, Ellis Marsalis, Steve Masakowski, Bill Huntington, Mike Pellera, John Mahoney, George French, Emile Vinette, Germaine Bazzle, David Lee, Jr., Alvin Red Tyler, Tony Dagradi and Harold Battiste.

In 1997, Brian Blade formed The Fellowship Band with pianist Jon Cowherd. The band members are bassist Chris Thomas, saxophonists Myron Walden and Melvin Butler.

The Fellowship Band released their self-titled debut album on Blue Note Records in 1998, Perceptual in 2000, Season of Changes in 2008, Landmarks in 2014 and Body And Shadow in 2017.

While continuing to work with The Fellowship Band, Blade has been a member of the Wayne Shorter quartet since 2000. He has recorded with Daniel Lanois, Joni Mitchell, Kenny Garrett, Ellis Marsalis, Marianne Faithfull, Norah Jones, Emmylou Harris, and Bob Dylan.

In 2009, Blade released his first album as a singer-songwriter, Mama Rosa. Songs dedicated to his grandmother and family, written from experiences about his life so far. The album features Daniel Lanois, vocalist Kelly Jones, bassist Chris Thomas, guitarist Goffrey Moore and pianists Aaron Embry and Jon Cowherd.

Steve Cardenas

Guitarist Steve Cardenas began his musical career in Kansas City and has been an integral part of the New York City jazz community since 1995. Steve has performed and recorded with many well-known and highly esteemed musicians. Notably, he was a longstanding member of the Paul Motian Electric Bebop Band, Charlie Haden Liberation Music Orchestra, the Steve Swallow Quintet, as well as Joey Baron‘s, Killer Joey. Steve is currently a member of Ben Allison and Think Free, John Patitucci Electric Guitar Quartet, Jon Cowherd Mercy Project and Adam Nussbaum Lead Belly Project. He has toured extensively throughout Europe, North and South America and Asia, performing at international music festivals, theaters and clubs. Steve also leads his own trio and has released four recordings as a leader. His most recent album, Charlie & Paul, was released on Newvelle Records last year.

Steve is also a well-respected educator. He is on faculty at The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York City where he directs the Thelonious Monk Ensemble, Improv Ensemble and the Guitar Duos class, as well as offering individual lessons. He has also been on faculty at the California Institute of the Arts, Siena Summer Jazz Workshop, Brubeck Summer Jazz Colony, Stanford Jazz Workshop and Banff International Workshop in Jazz and Creative Music. Additionally, Steve is co-author, along with editor Don Sickler, of the Thelonious Monk Fakebook, Hal Leonard Publishing. The Thelonious Monk Fakebook marks the first time all of Monk’s compositions have appeared in one volume, many of them appearing for the first time.

Tony Scherr

Tony Scherr is an American jazz and folk-rock bassist, guitarist, singer-songwriter, and record producer. Tony grew up in New Haven, CT. As a teenager he started performing with Woody Herman and eventually moved to New York City in the late-1980s, where he became a prolific session and touring musician, working with Bill Frisell, John Scofield, Norah Jones, Ana Egge, The Lounge Lizards, Sex Mob, Jesse Harris, Maria Schneider Orchestra, Rickie Lee Jones, Dakota Station, Al Grey, Willie Nelson, Aaron Neville, Feist, Sun Kil Moon among others.
